Obituary

Galloway Thomas Charles, 71, passed away on October 1st after a heroic, 15 month battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born in Insch, Aberdeenshire, Scotland on October 24th, 1947 to the late Sylvia and Tommy Charles. Pursuing a love of the arts and an unrelenting creative spirit, he was called to a career in design as an apprentice at Henry Widnell and Stewart in Edinburgh where he brought to life his passion for the fine arts, arts history and painting. His work later took him to Canada and then to the states where he ended up in Dalton, Georgia with a 52-year design career including over 28 years with the Mohawk Industries family where he was called a mentor and friend by many. He brought into this world not only an artistic eye in his work, but in his own personal artwork and his love of supporting local youth artists. Outside of work, he had a life-long passion for collecting and studying automobiles. He loved learning about the world around him, and this was apparent whether he was working in the yard or traveling with his family. He lived life with gratitude for every day, every opportunity and every encounter. Galloway always had a quick wit and a wry sense of humor, and as his colleagues said, "he brought a kindness that is legendary and talent that is exceptional into this world." He is survived by his wife Betty, his sons Nathan Charles of Tuscaloosa, AL and Jordan Woodard of Huntsville, AL, cousins Jane Bromley and her family, as well as George and Jane Horne and their families, all from Kent, England. A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, October 12th at 10 am at the Creative Arts Guild. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research.
