Obituary

James Walter Burns, born on August 18, 1938, in Dalton, Georgia, peacefully passed away at his residence on July 1, 2026, surrounded by family and friends. His life was marked by steady dedication, deep love, and a constant commitment to the people he cared about.

The son of John Franklin Burns and Lillie Malisa Burns, James was born in Dalton, where the values of hard work and loyalty were deeply instilled in him from an early age. He answered the call of duty to his country, serving with honor in the United States Army from 1961 to 1964. This chapter of service marked a foundation of responsibility and character that remained evident throughout the years.

Upon returning home, James devoted 20 + remarkable years as an electrician for Whitfield County Schools. His work ethic and reliability left an irreplaceable mark on the school district and the many colleagues who came to admire not only his technical skill but also his quiet generosity and helpful spirit. He brought a sense of warmth to his workplace, just as he did to his family and community.

James was a proud and active member of the Chatsworth Church of Christ, where he served as a Deacon, where he found spiritual strength and contributed to a community that held great meaning for him.

Family was the cornerstone of James’s life. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and uncle, and he always made himself available to those in need. His heart was open and ever-giving, leaving a legacy of kindness, encouragement, and selfless support. James is survived by his devoted wife, Yvonne Jeanette Burns; his children, John (Whitney) Burns and Melissa Montgomery; his sisters, Pauline Kendrick and Angela Burns; his grandchildren, Kara (Ethan) Blair, Dusten Montgomery, Emma Burns, and Grace Walker; and his great-grandchildren, Madeline Blair, Ethan River Blair and one great grandchild on the way. Each one carries with them cherished memories of his wisdom, affection, and presence.

James is also remembered by the memories of his dearly departed loved ones, including his father, John Franklin Burns; his mother, Lillie Malisa Burns; his son, Robert Eugene Burns; his brother, Johnny Franklin (Charlotte) Burns; and his sisters, Louis Brown, Bessie Burns, and Ellen Brown.

Outside of his professional and family commitments, James found great joy in the outdoors. Hunting and fishing were passions that renewed his spirit and connected him to the natural world, pursuits he cherished throughout his life.

James Walter Burns departure has left an emptiness in the hearts of all who knew him, yet his legacy endures in the love he gave and the example he set. The family invites friends and relatives to remember and honor James at a visitation on Sunday, July 5, 2026, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Dalton Funeral Home, located at 620 S Glenwood Ave, Dalton, GA 30721.
