Smith Hall Ellis Jr, age 82, passed from this life on February 15, 2024 after a long battle with cancer. He was born June 19, 1941 in Dalton, Ga. and was a lifelong resident of Whitfield County. He is preceded in death by his parents, Smith Hall Ellis Sr and Genevie Cochran Ellis; grandparents, Gordon and Lillis Cochran, Henry and Lelia Ellis; uncles and aunts, Cecil Cochran, Delmer Cochran (Dixie), Herschel Cochran (Ella), Lloyd Cochran (Kathleen), Leonard Cochran (Frances), Bobby Cochran (Betty), Bertha Wells (Bill), Minnie Ruth Hollis, Myrtle Hollis, Waymon Ellis (Ruby), Larry Ellis (Rosemary), Edgar Ellis, Maxine Pendergrass, and Bernice Ingle. He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Sandra Stone Ellis; sons, Smith Hall Ellis III "Smitty" (Lori), Barry Allen Ellis; daughter, Melanie Ellis Reed (Kenny); brother, Gene Hollis (Carolyn); grandchildren, Brooke Ellis Hasty (Austin), Jacob Smith Ellis (Emily) Kaleb A. Ellis, Karlee G. Ellis, Samuel Blake Reed, Brinkley Kate Reed, Caroline Faith Reed; great grandchildren, Brynleigh Hasty, Jack Hasty; aunts, Betty Cochran Jones (Dee), Frances Cochran; brothers-in-law, James "Buddy" Stone, Terry Wade Stone (Lisa); sister-in-law, Melanie Stone Peeples ; and numerous cousins. Smith was always a fun loving and active person. He loved outdoor sports including hunting, fishing, and golf. He graduated from North Whitfield High in 1960 and was voted Mr. North Whitfield 59-60. He had many lifelong friends who thought very highly of him, and many special friends who camped and hunted together. He worked at World Carpets for 33 years and another 17 years at Mohawk. He retired at age 72. The family would like to give a special thank you to Heartlite Hospice and Nurse Haley Roach for the care given to our family. The family will be receiving friends for visitation from 2-4 PM on Sunday, February 25, 2024 at Dalton Funeral Home.
